Hi there. I noticed that you put a link in Republic of Macedonia to sl:Makedonija which currently has no text. Interwiki links should only be put in to existing articles because otherwise it confuses users. You could put the link and comment it out if you think that's where the article will eventually be. Dori | Talk 21:18, Feb 12, 2004 (UTC)
- Hello, Dori! I edited two pages at the same time, but commited the English version first. Now it should be OK, sorry for the confusion. --Romanm 21:31, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Hi, Can you add the romanization of the Chinese titles in the list of Harry Potter book titles in Translation? It should be Chinese (traditional): Romanization (Chinese, "literal meaning"). Thanks Exploding Boy 14:14, Mar 21, 2004 (UTC)
Ex-Yugoslavia
[edit]Thanks for helping out with disambiguating links to Yugoslavias. I've done two sweeps so far but it only made a small dent on the total link count.
Having said that, are you sure that linking Former Yugoslavia to just one of them is the proper way? I'd rather if we changed links that link to there to be precise... --Shallot 22:53, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Yes, I agree with you. I think that an average English speaking person by Former Yugoslavia really means Former SFRY. But I agree that the links should be corrected to be precise. --Romanm 23:04, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Coat of Arms and other images
[edit]Hi Roman,
I see you're having a hard time to educate Avala on copyright issues. So do I. I went through all his image uploads and posted quite a lot of them on Copyright problems. (At least I think I got them all.) I did not post any Coat of Arms there, and, for the time being, I also refrained from posting images that were not clearly copyrighted. I think, these will have to be posted some day, too, but for now I just don't feel like doing this: it might put the user off completely because then I needed to post virtually all his uploads there.
Apparently, Avala has a "copy and see if I get away with it" attitude regarding images. He doesn't understand that no copyright notice doesn't mean "public domain", and he's very negligient in looking for copyright statements in the first place.
As to the Coat of Arms: I do not know what Serbian law says on that issue. It may be that Avala is even right, and CoAs cannot be protected in Serbia... The question remains, of course, whether a drawing of a CoA is original art and as such copyrightable.

Location maps
[edit]Thanks for your comment on my maps. I had originally made some maps for the three countries you mentioned, but I didn't upload them at the time. I've just done that now - here, here, and here. I hope those are adequate - I can see a number of ways to improve them, but if you think that these are okay, I'll leave them for now. -- Vardion 06:56, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Hi - I somehow forgot all about Montserrat, sorry. I've uploaded it now: Image:LocationMontserrat.png. I hope that's satisfactory - the island's a bit small, so it's hard to show on a map without making the scale to small. -- Vardion 05:24, 8 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I didn't have any maps for Åland or Guam, but it was easy enough to make some with what I already had. They're uploaded at Image:LocationAland.png and Image:LocationGuam.png. -- Vardion 14:41, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Maps for Svalbard, the Caymans, and the two Virgin Islands groups are now available: image:LocationSvalbard.png, image:LocationCaymanIslands.png, image:LocationUSVirginIslands.png, and image:LocationBritishVirginIslands.png. I hope they're satisfactory. As for Armenia, I don't really remember much about what I thought when creating it. I'm somewhat unclear about the political situation with some of those enclaves. Does this new version, image:LocationArmenia.png look closer to what's at Geography of Armenia? -- Vardion 05:41, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Maps for the five places you requested are now done: Image:LocationGibraltar.png, Image:LocationFaroeIslands.png, Image:LocationNetherlandsAntilles.png, Image:LocationTokelau.png, and Image:LocationAnguilla.png. I also fixed the Azerbaijan map as you suggested. Sorry it took so long to do these - for a while, I didn't have access to the particular files I needed. I hope these are satisfactory. -- Vardion 06:51, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit]I've just made a RfC page about User:Avala. Since you've been involved in trying to smooth out these disputes with Avala, you might want to go certify it. Snowspinner 19:08, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
RfA
[edit]I've recently been nominated for administrator status over at RfA. Since you're more familiar than most users with my work on Wikipedia, particularly through the conflict with Avala (Which seems particularly relevent to any admin nomination), I thought you might want to offer an opinion on the matter. I'd appreciate any vote you can offer, either for or against the nomination. Thanks very much. Snowspinner 14:19, Jun 2, 2004 (UTC)
More Location maps
[edit]My apologies about the huge delay in responding - I completely forgot about your message. I'm very sorry about that. I've uploaded Image:LocationAmericanSamoa.png, Image:LocationJersey.png, Image:LocationHongKong.png, Image:LocationMacau.png, Image:LocationSaintHelena.png, and Image:LocationFalklandIslands.png - I hope they're satisfactory. Since you asked for one of Jersey, I also made one for Guernsey at the same time (Image:LocationGuernsey.png) - I don't know whether this is useful or not, but I thought I might as well make it anyway. -- Vardion 09:32, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Reason for amending the Irish flag
[edit]I'm curious as to why you amended the Irish flag image. The flag is Green, White and Orange, the CIA factbook version you put up is incorrect, being the misconception of Green, White and Gold. This is a myth of confused people not understanding the symbolism of the Irish flag. It makes no sense for example for a Republican to object to Orange on the flag, as the whole reason for including Orange was to have a flag for a united Ireland. Zoney 23:45, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)
coat of arms
[edit]I saw that your friend contributed with adding communist emblems of former Yugoslavia. Because Serbia is still using old coat of arms it would be nice to upolad that coat of arms too.

Arbitration matter of Avala is closed
[edit]1) The above findings of fact show that Avala has often worked against consensus and majority opinion. We therefore rule that Avala must follow the majority opinion of the users involved concerning any controversial edits that Avala makes. One specific consequence is that violations of the three revert rule are not permitted. This probation period will last for one month.
2) For a period of 3 months, should a serious dispute arise between Avala and other users with respect to editing of an article Avala is required to cite substantial authority supporting the position he is taking and either enter the dispute resolution process regarding the matter or drop the matter. A serious dispute is defined as one in which any party to the dispute has reverted the other 3 times or more. After Avala makes his third revert he shall cease editing the article with respect to the disputed matter until completion of the dispute resolution process. Resolution of the dispute in his favor shall require verification that the authority cited adequately supports the information he advocates including in the article. With respect to matters of taste such as size of templates he is required to defer to majority opinion.
3) Given the fact that Avala is now editing at a low rate, we reserve the right to revisit the conduct issue of this user once/if Avala starts to edit at an increased rate again and other users complain about Avala's conduct. This probation would last one year.
For principles, findings of fact, and enforcement see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Avala#Final decision. --mav 21:48, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 19:33, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)
Image:Ptuj-grb.png
[edit]Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:Ptuj-grb.png. I noticed it didn't have an image copyright tag. I added unknown for now. Could you add the correct tag to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the image and I'll tag it for you. Thanks so much, Dbenbenn 00:12, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Geo-stubs
[edit]Hi Romanm! Good to see you've been adding a few more regional geo-stubs. I've gone through and put some more places into those categories from the general Category:Geography stubs. I noticed one geo-stub that should have a BiH-geo-stub label, but I daren't edit it myself. I know from complaints I've had from croatian and Icelandic Wikipedians that my browser can't handle diacritical marks properly, and the article Orahov Do has several of them. Can you change it to a BiH-geo-stub, please? Thanks :) Grutness|hello? 23:38, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- ...and Czechia this time! Which means a couple more I can't add in - Dowry town (which should have both Czechia-geo-stub and geo-term-stub) and Vysoké M<breve>to (hm. Can't even type that properly here! - you can get to it from [3] though). Thanks again! Romania probably needs a category now... Grutness|hello? 00:07, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC) PS - I hope you're remembering to add the new categories to the list at Wikipedia:Template_messages/Stubs/By_region!
Slovenian/Slovene
[edit]Hi, Roman. With regards to the Slovenian/Slovene issue, please refer to this discussion. To be brief, Nohat, a Wikipedia arbitrator had this to say before he cleaned up much of the big mess user XJam helped cause:
The reality is that "Slovenian" is is preferred in all English-speaking countries other than Britain. Including Ireland.
I haven't seen any examples yet of Slovenian organizations using "Slovene", and if there are, how many of them are not somehow British and how many of them are referring in particular to the language? Certainly "The Fran Ramovš Institute Of Slovenian Language", publishers of Slovenian dictionaries and grammars, use "Slovenian" in reference to the language. Second, the argument that it is scarcely relevant that the official website of SAZU calls itself "Slovenian" is ridiculous. It's the official web site, and it's in English! And it says "Slovenian"! Just because it's contrary to your preferred usage doesn't make it irrelevant.
The primary goal of Wikipedia is to provide as much information to as many people as possible, and insisting on using a rare regionalism over an internationally-accepted form is contrary to that goal. If you ask any reasonable Wikipedian, you will find that they will all agree that if the goal of providing accessible information conflicts with the supposed "goal" of keeping spelling diverse, then we should err on the side of accessibility rather than diverse spelling.
And finally, regardless of who originally wrote the article, you are the only one who is insisting on calling it "Slovene", contrary to the vast majority of international English usage.
Slovene is a completely unnatural and awkward sounding term for a country that ends in -ia. In addition, Roman, virtually no native-English speaking Slovenian uses the term Slovene! Even in the England, Slovene is becoming archaic. The Euroleague, UEFA, and the Olympics all use Slovenian exclusively. And many English newspapers (and even Eurosport, surely you've noticed this) use Slovenian more often than not.
This is a unique period where we (Slovenians) have an opportunity to solidify the already dominant and preferred term as the 'one' others will refer to us as forevermore. I would like to add that it is a real shame a few users, like XJam, are so narrowminded and audacious that they think what *they* know what sounds better in a foreign language than native speakers. There is a 'reason' the vast majority of native-English speaking Slovenians use strictly Slovenian. And there is reason the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and most international Slovenian companies use strictly Slovenian, as well. -BT
Dragan Kojadinovic
[edit]Thanks for the information (I'd guessed that it was Belgrade, but I didn't want to add that until I was sure). About my second question: do you know if he campaigned to be elected mayor of Belgrade, or for someone else, or what? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:51, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Diacritics
[edit]As you know, 'š' and 's' are completely different letters in Slovenian. For this reason, the diacritic warning on Janez Janša's page is not correct and should be removed. -BT
- I agree. Is there any other foreign characters warning we could use? --romanm (talk) 18:51, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
None of which I'm aware of. Are you sure we need one? To me, the warning at the top is an eyesore. I don't think such a warning needs to be one first things a visitor sees. At any rate, here is Janša's French page: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janez_Jan%C5%A1a. The only immediate problem I see is that if someone types into the search engine "Janez Jansa" nothing turns up. To fix this (on the French wiki), when I have time, I will create a "Janez Jansa" link that forwards to the "Janez_Jan%C5%A1a" page. -BT
Morphogenesis - Alan Turing
[edit]I noticed your removal of the link to Alan Turing on Morphogenesis. I do believe Alan Turing had a role in the ideas behind Morphogenesis. It might be a good idea to discuss this with the original contributor and amplify the contributions rather than to remove it.
Shyamal 05:42, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- True, my mistake. I thought that this sentence from Alan Turing does not say much about Morphogenesis beside Turings interests in it:
- Turing worked from 1952 until his death in 1954 on mathematical biology, specifically morphogenesis. He published one paper on the subject called "The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis" in 1952. His central interest in the field was understanding Fibonacci phyllotaxis, the existence of Fibonacci numbers in plant structures. He used reaction-diffusion equations which are now central to the field of pattern formation. Later papers went unpublished until 1992 when Collected Works of A.M. Turing was published.
- IMHO, if Turing's work is indeed important in that field, this should be described in the Morphogenesis article - listing Turing in the "see also" section is not enough. I did leave a note to the original contributor on his talk page, though. --romanm (talk) 11:30, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

- Those are the pictures that were created and uploaded to Slovene Wikipedia by Plp. I tried to contact Plp more than once to clarify the license information, but he seems to be unreachable. Slovenia
[edit]Hi there! You are welcome to join WikiProject Slovenia . We need as many Slovene members as possible!!
♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:49, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I'd like to invite all interested parties to participate in the RfC on how should the birth place of the Slovene hockey player Anže Kopitar be stated. Currently it says "born in Jesenice, Yugoslavia, now Slovenia". I think this is unclear and should be rectified. It makes it seem like Jesenice was previously not part of Slovenia or like Slovenia did not exist at that time, nothing of which makes sense. The phrasing "born in Jesenice, Slovenia, Yugoslavia" leaves no doubt. --Eleassar my talk 08:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:41, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
File source problem with File:Lifebook.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Lifebook.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:17, 23 June 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Anrie (talk) 20:17, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- I took this photo myself, thank you for letting me know that there is a problem. BTW, the policy of deleting such images after 48 hours is nonsense - if, by any chance, I hadn't log in to the Wikipedia for two days, my image would have been deleted. --romanm (talk) 20:59, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)
[edit]Seasons Greetings,
This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.
Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.
While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.
Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.
This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.
Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 06:03, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Select Survey Invite
[edit]I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take no more than 1-2 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.
Your survey Link: https://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9S3JByWf57fXEkR?Q_DL=56np5HpEZWkMlr7_9S3JByWf57fXEkR_MLRP_d0eQdxDsA6BNQAl&Q_CHL=gl
I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.
Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 12:39, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Speedy deletion nomination of VIW
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on VIW requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Alexandermcnabb (talk) 12:22, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Alexandermcnabb! There is no "Contest this speedy deletion" on the VIW page. I for one still think that this disambiguation page is useful, but I don't really care, go ahead if you think that Wikipedia will be better without this page. --romanm (talk) 18:28, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
